Nikola Tesla Museum

The Nikola Tesla Museum is small — four rooms in a 1920s villa in the Savamala district — but its collection is surprisingly engaging. Tesla's working models and original patents are displayed alongside recreations of the demonstrations he staged in the 1890s to prove the safety of alternating current. The famous rotating magnetic field model, the tesla coil, and the early radio receiver are all here. Guides can run the equipment, which dramatically drives home just how revolutionary Tesla's ideas were.

The gold sphere containing Tesla's ashes sits in the centre of the main room, which sounds morbid but is treated with genuine reverence. The museum also holds a large quantity of original documents, photographs, and correspondence. The collection is modest by international museum standards but the curatorial passion is evident. Located in the Vračar district; book a guided tour in advance.

A story
Tesla's ashes were moved to this museum in 1957 and placed in a gold-plated sphere that sits at the centre of the main exhibition room. Tesla had requested cremation and for his ashes to be returned to Serbia; he died in New York in 1943, penniless and largely forgotten, having been outmanoeuvred in patents by Edison and Westinghouse during the so-called War of the Currents.
