Museum of Yugoslavia

The Museum of Yugoslavia in New Belgrade is one of the most important museums in the Balkans for understanding 20th-century European history. The complex includes several buildings covering the social, political, and cultural history of the Yugoslav federation from 1918 to 1991, and the collection of personal items, propaganda posters, state gifts to Tito, and documentary footage is extraordinary.

The House of Flowers — Tito's mausoleum — is the emotional centre of the complex. The tomb itself is simple; the orchid collection in the surrounding greenhouse is maintained to this day. The museum is essential for anyone trying to understand how Yugoslavia was assembled, how it held together, and how it came apart. Located in New Belgrade, across the Sava from the old city, reachable by bus or taxi.

A story
Josip Broz Tito is buried in a greenhouse pavilion here called the House of Flowers — a fitting monument for a man who loved orchids and whose funeral in 1980 was attended by more heads of state than any event in history to that point. Four kings, 31 presidents, and 22 prime ministers came to pay their respects.
