Temple of Saint Sava

one of the world's largest Orthodox churches

Address Svetog Save 1, Belgrade

The Temple of Saint Sava on the Vračar plateau is one of the largest Orthodox Christian churches in the world, with a dome weighing 4,000 tonnes and an interior volume to match. Construction began in 1935 on the site where the Ottomans are said to have burned the relics of Saint Sava, founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church, and has proceeded intermittently ever since. The exterior was largely complete by the early 2000s and the gilded mosaic interior has been finished in stages. The sheer scale of the building is striking from anywhere in the southern part of the city.
