Republic Square is Belgrade's main public space and the traditional meeting point of the city. The square is anchored by the equestrian statue of Prince Mihailo Obrenović (1882) and flanked by the National Theatre (1868) on one side and the National Museum on the other. The museum, one of the most important in Serbia, holds an extensive collection of archaeological finds, Serbian medieval art, and European paintings. Knez Mihailova — the main pedestrian street — runs from here down to Kalemegdan fortress.
