The Strip

The four-mile parade of mega-resorts that is Las Vegas Boulevard South

The Strip is the four-mile stretch of Las Vegas Boulevard South where almost every iconic Vegas thing happens. Technically it sits outside the city limits, in the unincorporated township of Paradise — a small bureaucratic quirk that is occasionally relevant for tax and zoning, never relevant for visitors. The boulevard runs roughly north-south from the STRAT tower down to the Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign.

Walking the Strip takes longer than it looks. The mega-resorts are huge — a "short walk between two casinos" can easily be 20 minutes. Most properties are connected by skybridges across the major intersections, and a few are linked by free trams. The pavement is at its best after dark, when the heat drops, the neon comes on, and the street performers, lit cocktails, and free fountain shows hit full pace.

Most visitors split the Strip into three rough sections: the south end (Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, MGM Grand) which is family-friendly and feels slightly less hectic; the center (Bellagio, Caesars, Venetian, Wynn) which is the dense luxury core; and the north (The STRAT, Resorts World, the SLS) which is quieter and where redevelopment is still landing.
