Changlimithang Stadium

National stadium where traditional archery tournaments are held

Bhutan's national stadium, located in the centre of Thimphu near the Wang Chhu river. Outside major sporting events, the ground is used for traditional archery tournaments — regular fixtures that are open to the public. Watching a Bhutanese archery contest is one of the more unusual spectator experiences available in the country: archers shoot from 145 metres, and a hit on the small wooden target triggers a ritual dance from the scorer's teammates. The stadium is also one of the main venues for the Thimphu Tshechu festival in autumn.

A story
Changlimithang is not just a sports ground — it sits on the site of a 1885 battle that determined the unification of Bhutan under Ugyen Wangchuck, the first hereditary king. The stadium hosts Bhutan's national sport, archery (da), as well as football, and is where the Thimphu Tshechu festival's outdoor events take place. Archery competitions here can go on all day, accompanied by singing, dancing, and considerable competitive pride.
