A small 16th-century monastery on the northern outskirts of Thimphu, a few kilometres past Dechen Phodrang. The two white towers of Pangri Zampa are among the most photographed buildings in the area. The monastery is the official residence of Bhutan's royal astrologers and is a working religious institution — the atmosphere is quieter and less touristy than the main sites. The surrounding landscape — open fields, river, forested hills — is some of the most pleasant close to the city.
Pangri Zampa Monastery
16th-century monastery where the royal astrologers reside
A story
Pangri Zampa monastery, built in the 16th century, is where the royal astrologers of Bhutan live and work. Before any major national decision — from coronations to the auspicious timing of festivals — the astrologers here are consulted. The monastery also offers intensive residential meditation retreats, which can be applied for by serious practitioners through the monastic body.
