A working nunnery on the forested hillside above central Thimphu, reached by a steep trail from the Kawajangsa area. The complex is quieter than the more visited monasteries and offers a genuine sense of a community living by religious routine. The main chorten in the courtyard is an active focus of devotion. The views from the upper terraces take in the valley and the hills beyond the city. The walk up takes 20–30 minutes and passes through mature oak and pine forest.
Zilukha Nunnery
Active nunnery on a forested hilltop above the city
A story
Zilukha Nunnery (officially Drubthob Goemba) is home to around 100 nuns and sits on a wooded ridge directly above the Royal Textile Academy. The nuns follow a strict daily schedule of meditation and study, but the monastery is open to respectful visitors who can observe the courtyard and main shrine. The hill walk up through the trees is one of the better short hikes available within the city boundaries.
