The bicameral Parliament of Bhutan — the National Assembly and National Council — is housed in buildings in the northern part of Thimphu near Tashicho Dzong. Bhutan's transition to a constitutional monarchy was completed in 2008, and the parliament buildings represent the country's newest significant architectural project. The complex is not generally open to tourists except during specific public events, but the exterior — designed in traditional Bhutanese architectural style — is worth seeing as an example of how the kingdom applies its design rules to modern civic buildings.
