Phajoding Monastery

High-altitude monastery at 3600m, reached by a half-day hike

The best hike from central Thimphu leads up through oak and pine forest to this cluster of temples and retreat cabins at 3600 metres. The ascent takes 2–2.5 hours from the trailhead above Motithang; the return is around 1.5 hours. The trail is well-marked and widely used by both pilgrims and fit tourists. The monastery is active — monks live here year-round — so approach the inner shrine rooms respectfully. The sweeping views of the Thimphu valley from the ridge are the best available without a longer trek.

A story
Phajoding monastery sits at 3600 metres above sea level on a ridge above Thimphu, requiring a 4–5 hour round-trip hike through blue pine and oak forest. The monastery complex comprises about 10 separate temples and hermitage cells, and is still used by monks for long meditation retreats. On a clear day, the ridge offers views across the Thimphu valley and, in winter, of snow-capped peaks beyond.
