Borneo Cultures Museum

The Borneo Cultures Museum is a purpose-built successor to the Sarawak State Museum, opened in 2022 and covering much of the same ground with significantly more space and more modern presentation. The collection covers the major ethnic groups of Borneo — Iban, Bidayuh, Orang Ulu, Melanau, Penan, Malay, and Chinese — with galleries dedicated to traditional crafts, music, ceremonies, and belief systems. The textile collection is outstanding, with examples of pua kumbu (Iban ceremonial cloth), beadwork, and basketry.

The building itself is worth noting: the roof form echoes a traditional longhouse, and the interior spaces are designed to give a sense of the architecture and social organisation of longhouse living. Entry is free or very low cost. The museum is about ten minutes' walk from the waterfront, right beside the old Sarawak State Museum.

A story
The Borneo Cultures Museum opened in 2022 in a custom-built building designed to resemble a traditional longhouse from above. It is the largest museum in Sarawak and one of the newest, built to complement rather than replace the old Sarawak State Museum across the road. The two museums together form one of the most comprehensive explorations of Bornean culture available anywhere.
