Satok Weekend Market

The Satok weekend market — known locally as the "tamu" — runs on Saturday evenings and Sunday mornings and is the most authentic market experience in Kuching. The crowd is overwhelmingly local, and the goods reflect Sarawak rather than the souvenir version of it: jungle produce, live fish, dried shrimp, chillies, jungle honey, traditional medicines, handicrafts at lower prices than the Main Bazaar shops, and occasional wild forest produce that is technically regulated but reliably present.

The market occupies a covered space near the Satok bridge, a short taxi ride from the waterfront. Arriving early on a Sunday morning gives the best experience and the best produce. Bring cash. The food stalls at the edge of the market sell breakfast — noodle soups, roti canai, and coffee — alongside the goods market.

A story
The Satok market sells things that you will not find at other markets in Kuching: wild boar meat, jungle ferns, live monitor lizards, bags of dried insects, medicinal plants from the forest, and traditional blowpipes alongside the more ordinary fruit and vegetables. It reflects what Sarawak actually is — a place where urban modernity coexists with forest traditions in ways that rarely show up in the tourist-oriented parts of the city.
