Katoghike Tsiranavor Church of Avan is a fragmentary but important early medieval church on Yerevan's northern side. Built in the 6th century, it is often discussed for its domed cruciform plan, a design that helped shape later Armenian church architecture even though the building now survives mostly as ruins.
It is not as convenient as the churches in central Yerevan, so it suits travellers with a specific interest in Armenian architecture. The reward is seeing a quieter, older layer of the city, away from the polished cascade of museums and monuments downtown.
