Saint Sarkis Cathedral

Address Israelyan Street

The cathedral of the Diocese of Ararat, perched on the edge of the Hrazdan River gorge in central Yerevan. The original 16th-century church was rebuilt several times; the current structure, with its sharp conical dome and pale tufa cladding, dates from a major reconstruction completed in 2000. The bell tower — gift of an Armenian-American donor — is faced in red marble.

The terrace overlooking the gorge, with its row of khachkars (Armenian carved cross-stones), is a good place to take in the view down to the Hrazdan and the bridges crossing it. Saint Sarkis, the patron of young lovers, is celebrated here each February with a particularly lively service.
