Mother Armenia and Victory Park

A 22-metre statue of a sword-wielding woman atop a pedestal that once carried a colossal Stalin, looking out over the city from the high northern ridge of Yerevan. The figure represents Mother Armenia — a Soviet motif of defiant maternal womanhood that took on a particularly Armenian flavour here after the original Stalin was dismantled in 1962.

The surrounding Victory Park is a sprawling Soviet-era pleasure ground of cafes, an amusement park, and an artificial lake. The Military Museum housed inside the pedestal of the statue covers the Second World War and the more recent Nagorno-Karabakh conflicts. The walk up from the Cascade takes 15 minutes and rewards with another fine view of Ararat.

A story
The 22-metre statue replaced a colossal Stalin in 1962. The Stalin, by sculptor Sergey Merkurov, was the largest statue of the dictator in the Soviet Union; when it was lowered, three workers died and a hundred more were injured.
