The famous brandy distillery on the heights above the Hrazdan gorge, founded in 1887 and producer of the Ararat brand that became a symbol of Soviet luxury. Tours run several times daily and include the original brick-vaulted cellars, the barrel hall, and a guided tasting of three or five brandies depending on the level chosen.

The view from the terrace across the gorge to the Genocide Memorial on the opposite ridge is one of the best in the city. Tours are bookable on the website and run in English, Russian, and Armenian. Allow about 90 minutes.

Winston Churchill is said to have received a personal supply of Ararat brandy from Stalin after praising it at the 1945 Yalta Conference — half a million bottles, by some accounts. The story is half-true; the gift was real, the quantity legendary.
