Hidden under a passage off Sayat-Nova Avenue is one of Yerevan's great Soviet-era murals — Grigor Khanjyan's massive "Armenian Alphabet, Battle of Avarayr, Vardanants", three monumental works painted between 1976 and the early 1980s in a vivid, almost cinematic style. The complex was originally part of the Yerevan Trade Union House.
Visiting requires a small entry fee at the door of the union hall and often a knock to rouse the caretaker. It is well worth the small hassle — these are among the most ambitious murals produced in the Soviet south.
