Komitas Pantheon

A peaceful walled cemetery on the north-eastern edge of Yerevan, established in 1936 as the burial place for the Armenian cultural and political elite. The composer Komitas — whose grave gives the pantheon its name — is here, along with the painter Martiros Saryan, the filmmaker Sergei Parajanov, the writer William Saroyan (half of his ashes; the rest lie in Fresno), and dozens of Armenia's leading actors, writers, and politicians.

The headstones are themselves works of art, many commissioned from the country's best sculptors. It is a contemplative, well-tended place and a sort of three-dimensional encyclopaedia of Armenian cultural achievement.
