Skopje's Clock Tower stands near the Sultan Murat Mosque and dates from 1572, when the city was an important Ottoman trading centre. It is considered one of the earliest clock towers in the Ottoman Empire.
The tower has a more Islamic profile than many later clock towers in North Macedonia. Its original clock was lost after the 1963 earthquake, but the tower remains a useful stop when walking through the old bazaar area.
