Matka Canyon is one of the best escapes from Skopje: a steep limestone gorge where the Treska River has been dammed into a narrow lake. Boats run into the canyon, trails follow the water, and the cliffs hide caves, monasteries, and good views.
It is popular for a reason. Come for the scenery first, then add a boat trip or a walk to one of the medieval churches if you have time.
