Muranów

Built on the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto — a neighbourhood that carries its history in its elevated streets

Muranów is built literally on the rubble of the Warsaw Ghetto. After the war, engineers estimated it would take decades to clear the debris, so the ruins were simply levelled and used as the foundation for a new residential neighbourhood. The ground level in Muranów is noticeably higher than surrounding areas — a physical trace of the destruction.

The neighbourhood is home to the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews and the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes. Walking its streets alongside these memorials is a different experience from visiting any conventional historic site — you are standing on what happened, not looking at a reconstruction of it.
