Warsaw has installed 15 special park benches throughout the city centre, each with a button that plays a short piece of Chopin's music. Designed as musical waypoints on a walking route connecting places associated with the composer, the benches are positioned at significant sites including the Royal Route, the Old Town, and the park where he performed as a child.
Each bench is different in design, shaped according to its location. They are surprisingly moving encounters — pressing a button in a busy square and hearing Chopin's Nocturne emerge is a genuine pleasure. A free map of all 15 benches is available from tourist information offices, and following the route on foot takes about three hours.
