Nowy Świat (New World) continues south from Krakowskie Przedmieście and is Warsaw's most pleasant shopping street — a pedestrianised-feeling boulevard lined with restored 19th-century tenements housing cafes, bookshops, and restaurants. In summer, outdoor tables fill the wide pavement and the street has the feel of a Parisian boulevard. In winter, Christmas lights and heated terraces keep it lively.
The ice cream shops on Nowy Świat are famously good — locals queue in all weathers. At the southern end, where it meets Aleje Jerozolimskie, the street transitions to Nowy Świat-Uniwersytet metro station, the eastern portal of which is designed in a deliberately playful, retro style that has become a Warsaw design landmark.
