Chopin Monument and Sunday Concerts

Famous sculpture of Chopin beneath a willow tree in Łazienki Park, setting for free Sunday concerts

The Chopin Monument in Łazienki Park is one of the most visited sculptures in Poland — a large bronze statue of the composer in a stylised posture beneath a cascading willow tree, designed by Wacław Szymanowski and unveiled in 1926. The Nazis melted it down in 1940; the post-war reconstruction was completed in 1958 from the original model.

On Sunday afternoons from May to September, the park's amphitheatre surrounding the monument becomes Warsaw's most civilised entertainment: free piano recitals of Chopin's music, performed by different pianists each week. Two sessions run, at noon and 4pm. Bring a picnic, sit on the grass, and listen to Mazurkas and Nocturnes in the open air. It is one of the genuinely unmissable Warsaw experiences.
