Okopowa Street Jewish Cemetery

One of Europe's largest Jewish cemeteries, with over 200,000 graves spanning 200 years

The Okopowa Street Jewish Cemetery is one of the largest Jewish cemeteries in Europe, covering 33 hectares and containing over 200,000 graves dating from 1806 to the present. It survived the war in damaged but recognisable form, and has been gradually restored since. The cemetery is densely forested, its paths shaded by old trees, with extraordinary carved gravestones in Hebrew, Yiddish, Polish, and German.

Notable graves include those of Esperanto creator L.L. Zamenhof, novelist I.L. Peretz, and many figures from Warsaw's pre-war Jewish intellectual life. The cemetery is best visited with a map from the entrance. Allow two to three hours if you want to explore properly. It is an important and moving place, but also simply a beautiful and unusual garden in its own right.
