18 Miła Street Memorial

The command bunker of the Ghetto Uprising leaders — a mound marking where Mordechai Anielewicz died

The mound at 18 Miła Street marks the command bunker of the Jewish Combat Organisation during the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Mordechai Anielewicz, the 23-year-old commander, and around 100 of his fighters died here when German forces found and sealed the bunker. The site, in the Muranów neighbourhood, is one of the most powerful memorials in Warsaw — simple, barely marked, and carrying enormous weight.

Walking from here to the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes, a few minutes away, traces the geography of the Uprising. The POLIN Museum provides the full historical context. This is not a tourist site with interpretation boards and guided tours — it is a place to stand and consider.

A story
On 8 May 1943, German forces discovered the command bunker at 18 Miła Street and pumped gas into it. Mordechai Anielewicz, the 23-year-old commander of the Ghetto Uprising, died here along with around 100 of his fighters. The survivors escaped through the sewers. The mound marking the site was built over the ruins of the bunker itself and cannot be excavated — it is both memorial and grave.
