PGE Narodowy (National Stadium)

Poland's national football stadium, built on the site of the legendary 10th-Anniversary Stadium

The PGE Narodowy is Poland's national football stadium, opened in 2012 for the UEFA European Championships co-hosted by Poland and Ukraine. It holds 58,580 spectators and sits on the east bank of the Vistula, near the Poniatowski Bridge. Its wavy red-and-white exterior references the colours of the Polish flag. The site was previously occupied by the legendary 10th-Anniversary Stadium — a huge earth mound stadium built in 1955 from the rubble of the destroyed city.

The old 10th-Anniversary Stadium became, during the 1990s, the largest and most chaotic open-air market in Europe: the Jarmark Europa bazaar, where traders from across Eastern Europe and beyond sold everything imaginable from car boots and stalls. At its peak it had 6,000 stalls and 100,000 daily visitors. The stadium was demolished to make way for the current one.
