The Warsaw Zoo in Praga has operated since 1928 and is one of the more pleasant zoos in Central Europe, with a good collection including big cats, elephants, and a large collection of European wildlife. The grounds are extensive and well-maintained. But the zoo's most extraordinary history is from the occupation: director Jan Żabiński and his wife Antonina hid over 300 Jewish people in the zoo's buildings and animal enclosures after the Germans requisitioned the animals.
The story became internationally known through the 2007 book and 2017 film The Zookeeper's Wife. The Żabińskis' villa, where families were hidden, still stands in the zoo grounds. A good destination if you're spending a day in Praga.
