Chopin Museum

Interactive museum dedicated to Poland's greatest composer, in the Baroque Ostrogski Palace

The Chopin Museum occupies the Baroque Ostrogski Palace and is one of the largest Chopin collections in the world. It reopened in 2010 with a complete multimedia redesign — interactive displays let you listen to recordings, explore manuscripts, and move through reconstructed environments. The museum holds original letters, portraits, the composer's last piano, and a cast of his hands.

Chopin was born near Warsaw and gave his first public concert in the city at age seven. He left Poland at 20 and never returned, but remained Polish in spirit and music. His outdoor concerts are held every Sunday in summer at the Chopin Monument in Łazienki Park — free to attend, always popular, sometimes sublime.

A story
One of the strangest relics in Warsaw is Chopin's heart, preserved in a crystal urn inside a pillar of the Holy Cross Church on Krakowskie Przedmieście. When Chopin died in Paris in 1849, he asked that his heart be returned to Poland. His sister Ludwika smuggled it out of France in a jar of cognac, hidden in her luggage past border guards.
