A vast pink-stone statue of the insurgent miner-hero, standing on a ridge directly above the centre and visible from every part of the city. The point of going up is the view — the most photographed in Guanajuato, looking down across the entire bowl of coloured houses to the church towers and the green Jardín. Sunset is best.
Reach it by walking up the steep alley behind the Teatro Juárez (about twenty minutes, slow), or by the funicular from beside the theatre (a two-minute glide for a few pesos). The hilltop has a small bar and a craft market.
