A masterpiece of Mexican Churrigueresque, built between 1765 and 1788 with the personal fortune of the mine's owner Antonio de Obregón. The exterior is carved pink cantera; the interior is overwhelming — three altarpieces of carved and gilded wood that took thirty years to complete, fitted with so many cherubs, vines, and saints that the visual effect is almost dizzying.
The setting on the hill above the city, with views across the Bajío, is part of the experience. Across the plaza is the Bocamina San Cayetano mine entrance.
