Mercado Hidalgo

A grand cast-iron market hall in the style of Les Halles, sitting at the lower end of the centre. The ground floor is fresh produce, butchers, fishmongers, and food stalls; the upper gallery is handicrafts and souvenirs. Even visitors not shopping should walk through to see the building, especially in the morning when the light comes in through the glass roof.

The taco and gordita stalls in the basement are excellent and frequented by locals.

A story
The vast iron-and-glass roof was designed by Ernest Brunel, an associate of Gustave Eiffel, and built in 1910 for the centenary of the War of Independence. The market opened on 16 September of that year.
