Museum of International Folk Art

World's largest collection of folk art — over 130,000 objects

One of the great American museums, set on Museum Hill a couple of kilometres southeast of the centre. The collection of more than 130,000 folk art objects from around the world is the largest of its kind, and the Girard Wing — a single dense display of 10,000 toys and figurines — is justifiably famous.

Allow at least two hours. The Hispanic Heritage Wing covers New Mexican santeros, retablos, and folk Catholic art exceptionally well. Museum Hill includes three other museums; an all-in pass is good value.

A story
The Girard Wing's centrepiece display crams 10,000 toys and folk objects from a hundred countries into one room — every dollhouse, masked dancer, and miniature wedding scene crammed together as Alexander Girard arranged them himself before donating his collection in 1978.
