Automobile Alley

A nine-block stretch of Broadway Avenue between downtown and Midtown, lined with two and three-storey brick buildings that were originally car showrooms for the first generation of American auto dealers — Ford, Chevrolet, Studebaker, Hudson — clustering close to the rail terminal in the 1910s and 1920s. The dealerships are long gone but the buildings remain, and have been converted into restaurants, boutiques, design firms and a few small hotels.

The district lights up its rooftop neon Christmas signs from late November through the new year, an event called the Auto Alley Holiday Window that draws crowds every weekend. The rest of the year it's a pleasant walk between downtown and the Plaza District, with good options for coffee and dinner along the way.
