Skirvin Hilton Hotel

Oklahoma City's grand downtown hotel, opened in 1911 by oil baron William Balser Skirvin and now operating as a Hilton after a long, expensive 2007 restoration. The thirteen-storey beaux-arts building has hosted seven presidents, and the interiors — gilded ceilings, marble corridors, the Art Deco-era ballroom and an underground swimming pool — have all been faithfully brought back.

The Park Avenue Grill on the ground floor is decent, the lobby bar is busier than you would expect on a weekday evening, and the building itself is worth a walk-through even if you aren't staying. The hotel's reputation as one of the most haunted in America does, fairly or otherwise, contribute to its mystique.

A story
The Skirvin is famously haunted by Effie, a chambermaid said to have been seduced by the original owner and then locked in a tenth-floor room until she leapt to her death with her infant. Visiting NBA teams have refused to stay in the building. The Boston Celtics, the Memphis Grizzlies and the New York Knicks have all reported unexplained noises and figures in the corridors; some players have moved out of the hotel in the middle of the night.
