Museum of Osteology

The only skeleton museum in the United States open to the public, attached to Skulls Unlimited International — the world's leading supplier of cleaned osteological specimens to universities and other museums. The displays cover over three hundred animals, from a sperm whale skeleton suspended from the ceiling to comparative galleries of skulls grouped by family.

Genuinely fascinating and not at all macabre. The behind-the-scenes prep room, where dermestid beetles eat the soft tissue off carcasses, is visible through a window — kids find this either thrilling or appalling. Open daily; well south of downtown but easy by car.
