Capitol Hill

The historic Hispanic and Latino business district south of the river, centred on Commerce Street and 25th Street. The area was developed as a separate streetcar suburb in the 1900s and absorbed into the city in 1910, and the early 20th-century commercial architecture survives largely intact along its main street.

The reason to come is the food: dozens of small Mexican restaurants, taquerias, panaderias, and paleterias serving the kind of regional Mexican cuisine that you would expect to find in El Paso or Brownsville. Locally famous places include Birrieria Diaz and Tacos Don Aaron. Weekly outdoor markets on Commerce Street through summer.
