Wheeler Ferris Wheel

A 30-metre Ferris wheel on the south bank of the Oklahoma River, the centrepiece of the still-developing Wheeler District. The view from the top covers downtown to the north and the rolling plains south of the city, and is at its best at sunset when the lights of the skyline begin to come on.

The wheel is open most evenings; tickets are around $10. The surrounding Wheeler District has a small but growing collection of food trucks, breweries and a Saturday farmers' market, and is connected to downtown by a pedestrian bridge over the river. A pleasant evening detour.

A story
The wheel is the original 1958 Santa Monica Pier Ferris wheel, retired in 2008 and bought by Oklahoma developers who shipped it inland and rebuilt it on the south bank of the river. Riding it in Oklahoma feels disorientingly like riding it in California — same gondolas, same paint, just a very different view.
