The seat of the Coptic Orthodox bishop of the Red Sea sits in the heart of El Dahar, a domed church dedicated to Saint Shenouda — the fifth-century Egyptian monastic reformer whose monastery still stands near Sohag in Upper Egypt. The current cathedral is mid-twentieth-century and largely undistinguished from the outside, but the interior is a riot of biblical murals in the maximalist style typical of modern Coptic churches: every wall and ceiling crammed with saints, scenes from Genesis, and gold trim. Visitors are welcome outside of services; women should cover their hair and shoulders. Combine with a walk through the bazaar around the corner.
