Changchun Temple

Changchun Temple is one of the great Daoist temples of central China — a Quanzhen school monastery on Shuangfeng Hill in Wuchang, founded in the Yuan dynasty in the 13th century and rebuilt many times since. The current buildings are mostly late Qing and Republic-era.

The complex includes the Hall of Tai Qing, the Five Patriarchs Hall, and an active community of Quanzhen Daoist monks, identifiable by their topknots and dark robes. The temple sits in a quiet corner of the city and the steady drift of incense, the moss-covered stone, and the bamboo on the slope give it a calm that the more touristy Buddhist temples have lost. Small admission fee.
