St Joseph's Cathedral (Hankou Catholic Cathedral) is a neo-Romanesque church on Shanghai Road in the old French concession, built in 1876 and serving the Catholic diocese of Hankou. The exterior is a serious piece of late-Victorian missionary architecture in stone and brick, with twin bell towers and a substantial nave.
The cathedral is open for visits outside service times and is still an active parish — masses are said in Mandarin and English on Sundays. It is the most visible Catholic landmark in central China and a quiet stop on any walk of the concession area.
