The Hankou Customs House on Yanjiang Dadao is the grand dame of the Hankou concession-era riverfront — a Greek-revival Custom House completed in 1924 with a 4-storey portico, a domed central clock tower, and the kind of presence that only the Customs Service of British-administered colonial ports ever achieved. It is locally known as Big Ben.
The building was designed by the British architectural firm Atkinson & Dallas and was for decades the tallest building in central China. It is still in use as a customs office and is not open inside, but the exterior — particularly when floodlit at night — is worth a stop on any walk of the old concessions.
