Honmyoji Temple is linked in local memory to the Great Fire of Meireki, the 1657 disaster that destroyed much of Edo and killed more than 100,000 people. The temple grounds also hold graves of notable figures, including swordsman Chiba Shusaku and official Toyama Kinshiro, making it a quiet historical stop away from Tokyo's larger temple circuits.
