Kogan-ji Temple is the best-known stop in Sugamo, a neighbourhood often nicknamed "Grandma's Harajuku" for its older shoppers and slower pace. Pilgrims come for Togenuki Jizo, a figure associated with healing, and for the Kannon statue that visitors wash where they hope their own aches will ease.
The temple is small, but the rituals make it memorable. Combine it with a walk along Sugamo's shopping street rather than treating it as a stand-alone cross-town trip.
