SCAI The Bathhouse occupies Kashiwayu, a public bathhouse building roughly 200 years old, converted into a contemporary art gallery in 1993. The building's original tiled facade and sloped roofline are unchanged from its bathhouse days, making the contrast with the international contemporary art inside — the gallery has shown Anish Kapoor, Lee Ufan, and other major names — one of the more striking small-scale spaces in Tokyo.
It's an easy stop on a walk through Yanaka's temple lanes, free to enter, and rarely crowded. Exhibitions rotate every few weeks.
