A small nineteenth-century madrasa next to Independence Square, now used as workshops for Uzbek craftsmen — wood carvers, miniature painters, ceramic artists, suzani embroiderers, and metalworkers. You can wander between the cells, watch them work, and buy directly from the artisans without going through a market middleman.
The madrasa is small and survives mainly because of its proximity to the square. Free entry; prices for crafts are negotiable but not by much.
