Monument of Independence and Humanism

Globe-topped monument at the centre of Independence Square

The bronze globe at the heart of Independence Square, erected in 1991 to replace the Lenin statue that had stood there since the 1970s. The outline of Uzbekistan is mapped on the globe; below it stands a figure of a mother holding a baby, symbolising the young republic.

A central reference point if you are walking around the square; the staircases and fountains around it fill with families on warm evenings.
