Tashkent's largest and oldest market, sprawling out from under a giant turquoise-tiled dome in the old town. Inside the dome itself the focus is meat and dairy — vast butchers' counters, walls of fresh-cured kurut (dried yogurt balls), and slabs of horsemeat sausage that are an Uzbek staple. Outside, the bazaar continues for blocks: spices, dried fruit, vegetables, pickles, household goods, and clothes.
This is the most lively, most authentic place in the city. Come hungry — non bread comes straight from the tandoor ovens around the perimeter, and the somsa (meat pastry) stalls are excellent. Watch your pockets in the crowded sections.
