Amir Timur Museum

Blue-domed national museum to Uzbekistan's chosen hero

A grand blue-domed building on Amir Timur Square, opened in 1996 for the 660th anniversary of Tamerlane's birth. The collection is part history, part propaganda — coins, weapons, manuscripts, miniature paintings, and elaborate dioramas tracing Timur and his Timurid descendants across the Silk Road world.

The English signage is patchy and the curatorial line treats Timur as Uzbekistan's George Washington, but the items themselves are excellent and the building is one of the more impressive public structures in the city. Allow an hour.
