Kukeldash Madrasa

Sixteenth-century Islamic college overlooking Chorsu

A modest sixteenth-century madrasa standing on a low hill above Chorsu Bazaar. Built during the reign of the Shaybanid khan Abdullah II, it has the classic Central Asian configuration — a portal entrance, an internal courtyard, and rows of student cells around the perimeter.

The madrasa has worn many hats over the centuries: caravanserai, fortress, prison, and museum. It still operates as a teaching institution. Drop in alongside Chorsu Bazaar — they are next door to each other.
